Bangkok’s Songkran Serenity: A Photographic Survey of Traffic and Public Sentiment

Bangkok's Songkran Serenity: A Photographic Survey of Traffic and Public Sentiment

After the Cabinet announced an additional special holiday for the Songkran Festival on Friday, April 12, 2024, extending the holiday to a total of 5 days from April 12-16, 2024, a PPTV HD 36 photographer surveyed the traffic situation in Bangkok, specifically along Rama 1 Road, Rama 4 Road, Ratchaprasong, and Victory Monument from 7:00-8:00 AM.

They found that the roads were clear and traffic was light, with fewer people than usual due to it being the first day of the Songkran holiday. It is expected that in the afternoon, people will come out to travel and celebrate the long Songkran holiday, possibly leading to heavy traffic returning to normal. Comments on the PPTV HD 36 Facebook page expressed appreciation for the peaceful atmosphere, convenience of traveling by bus without traffic, and the opportunity to see Bangkok in a different light.

Some mentioned the occasional solitude during bus rides on long holidays when there are few passengers. They suggested that Bangkok takes a break, calling it a dream city, where it takes only 2-3 hours for traffic to build up in front of shopping malls. Some people expressed mixed feelings about going to work on such a peaceful morning, where a 10-minute commute replaced the usual hour, enjoying the quietness but feeling a hint of loneliness.
