The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has affirmed that the city’s drainage infrastructure is equipped to handle the increased volume of rainwater, amid forecasts of more heavy rainfall expected to hit the capital in the coming days.

This reassurance follows reports of flooding in several low-lying neighborhoods after recent intense storms.

BMA spokesperson Aekvarunyoo Amrapala stated that approximately 14.05 million cubic meters (m³) of rainwater fell across Bangkok over the weekend.

Jetsada Juntaraprapha, head of the BMA’s Drainage and Sewerage Department, noted that the heaviest downpour occurred on Friday, with nearly 130 millimeters (mm) of precipitation recorded citywide. Thawi Watthana district experienced the most substantial rainfall, with 157mm during the same period.

Although September typically sees frequent rain, Mr. Jetsada attributed the unusually heavy weekend showers to the impacts of climate change.

On Monday, approximately 80% of Bangkok experienced moderate to heavy rain, with water levels reaching 0.46 meters above sea level at Lat Krabang water gate—exceeding the critical level of 0.35 meters.

By 7 a.m., weather stations reported varying rainfall amounts: Khlong Prawet-Ruam Phattana recorded about 94mm in the past 24 hours, Khlong Bang Na-Sri Nakarin in Bang Na district measured 84.5mm, and Khlong Sanam Chai-Khlong Bang Khun Tien in Chom Thong district logged 57.5mm.

The heavy rains temporarily overwhelmed some smaller canals, leading to minor flooding in certain low-lying areas. The authorities urged residents to avoid dumping waste into sewers to help prevent further flooding.
