BMA eyes green line debt payment

BTS bangkok one Feb 14 2024

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) plans to inform the Interior Ministry about an additional budget allocation for the initial installment of a debt totaling over 23 billion baht owed to the Green Line electric rail service operator.

Governor Chadchart Sittipunt confirmed that the ministry will be notified of the Bangkok Metropolitan Council’s (BMC) agreement to make a payment to the Bangkok Mass Transit System Plc (BTSC) for electrical and mechanical (E&M) installation work and operation services.

The BMA and its subsidiary, Krungthep Thanakhom (KT), owe the BTSC 30 billion baht for engaging their services in operation and maintenance.

To address the debt, the BMC recently approved the BMA’s use of additional expenditure from the annual budget for debt repayment. Mr. Chadchart mentioned that the BMC’s decision will be published in the Royal Gazette following his endorsement.

Subsequently, the BMA will deliberate on the payment process, including the installment amounts and duration, with a focus on maximizing efficiency and benefiting the public, as advised by the BMC. Discussions with KT regarding the payment schedule are anticipated to conclude within a few weeks, as per Mr. Chadchart.

Simultaneously, discussions overseen by Deputy Governor Wisanu Subsompon took place last week concerning the transfer of railway projects from the BMA to the Transport Ministry.

The BMA’s oversight of three railway projects—the Silver Line (Bang Na-Suvarnabhumi airport), the first section of the Grey Line (Watcharaphon-Thong Lor), and the Light Blue Line (Din Daeng-Sathon)—is expected to be transferred back to the ministry due to some segments of those projects being located within the ministry’s railway areas.

The ministry’s management is anticipated to assist in implementing the 20-baht fare rate policy and pursuing investment initiatives to facilitate additional infrastructure projects.
