BMA to enchance safety measures in Yaowarat

In light of the recent influx of visitors to Yaowarat, also known as Chinatown, Bangkok’s Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports have collaborated to enhance safety protocols in the area. The rise in foot traffic can be attributed to the music video featuring Thai K-pop sensation Lalisa “Lisa” Manobal, which showcases various aspects of Thai culture and has garnered significant online traction since its release on YouTube.

Efforts to bolster safety include regular inspections by Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt to evaluate infrastructural preparedness for the escalating visitor numbers. The strategic placement of traffic barriers along Yaowarat Road has proven effective in managing pedestrian flow amidst vehicular traffic, with plans to extend these barriers in anticipation of more arrivals.

Moreover, waste management has been underscored as a top priority, with initiatives such as increased deployment of street cleaners and additional litter bins. Governor Chadchart has also addressed issues like tuk-tuk and taxi congestion, emphasizing the need for orderly parking and fare regulations.

Looking ahead, the BMA has outlined a series of forthcoming endeavors for Yaowarat, including street closures to create pedestrian-friendly zones, the installation of additional pedestrian signals, and collaborations with local enterprises to enhance public amenities like toilets.

Acknowledging the impact of Lisa’s music video in elevating Yaowarat’s global appeal, Governor Chadchart expressed gratitude towards the artist for spotlighting the area. Meanwhile, Minister Sermsak Pongpanich and ministry officials have advocated for joint efforts between public and private entities to improve infrastructure, such as installing more CCTV cameras, enhancing signage, and upgrading pedestrian pathways.

Local businesses in Chinatown are optimistic about the potential tourism surge sparked by the video, anticipating economic benefits for the area. Government officials echo this sentiment, foreseeing a positive ripple effect on Thailand’s tourism industry as a whole, buoyed by Lisa’s international popularity.
