British Airways returns to Thailand from London-Gatwick

British Airways (BA) will be resuming services to two key Asian capital cities, with Bangkok becoming available on the route map in October and Kuala Lumpur set to return in November.

Both cities were part of British Airways’ network before the pandemic, leading many to speculate on their potential comeback.

The service to Kuala Lumpur is expected to commence on November 10 from BA’s main hub at Heathrow Airport, featuring daily flights and a range of cabin options to cater to various passenger preferences.

British Airways is adopting a different strategy for its Bangkok route, considering the destination’s popularity among leisure travelers. With a shift towards attracting more premium leisure traffic, BA aims to enhance the profitability of its Bangkok operations.

This move aligns with Thailand’s efforts to redefine its image and promote more meaningful travel experiences, reflected in the country’s recent tourism marketing campaigns.

Flights to Bangkok from Gatwick Airport will operate three times a week starting on October 28, utilizing older three-class Boeing 777-200ER aircraft during the upcoming winter season. This marks a departure from the airline’s previous daily service from Heathrow.

Given the competitive landscape, British Airways faces significant rivalry on routes to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, with carriers like Thai Airways, EVA Air, and Malaysia Airlines operating direct services from Heathrow.

Moreover, the airline must contend with competition from Middle Eastern airlines that offer connecting flights via hubs in Dubai and Doha, providing travelers with alternative, often low-cost options for reaching Asian destinations.

In addition to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, British Airways has introduced or resumed services to other destinations like Abu Dhabi (UAE), Agadir (Morocco), and Izmir (Turkey) this year.
