BYD Issues Recall for 97,000 Popular EVs Due to Steering Component Issue, According to Regulator

BYD has notified the Chinese regulator of a recall involving nearly 97,000 electric vehicles (EVs) due to a manufacturing defect related to a steering control unit, which poses a potential fire risk, as stated by the market regulator on Sunday.

The recall affects the Dolphin and Yuan Plus EV models produced in China between November 2022 and December 2023, according to a statement from the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).

BYD has not yet responded to requests for further comments.

The SAMR indicated that the company will instruct its dealers to implement a physical repair for the recalled vehicles.

The statement did not specify whether any of the affected EVs were exported.

The Dolphin and Yuan Plus models were BYD’s best-selling vehicles in 2023, collectively making up 26% of the 3 million cars sold by the company that year, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

This recall is unusual for BYD, which has experienced rapid growth to become the world’s leading seller of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The company previously recalled a small number of Tang plug-in hybrids in 2022 due to a battery pack defect that posed fire risks.
