Candidate for Palang Pracharath sues two influential Democrats for slander

Thawee Suraban of Palang Pracharath filed complaints with the Election Commission (EC) on Friday against Chuan Leekpai and Sathit Wongnongtaey, two Democrats, alleging that they had slandered him during their election campaigns.

The legal action was initiated by Thawee’s attorney on the grounds that the two had insulted his client on rally platforms in April and May, violating election laws.

Video footage of Chuan, the advising head for Democrats, and Sathit’s statements during the campaigns on May 10th and April 27th were provided by his attorney as proof.

Thawee is a seasoned politician who has won eight house seats in Trang province—a bastion for Chuan and Sathit—under the Democratic party flag.

He defected to the now-defunct Thai Rak Thai party in 2005, where he was elected on the party list. He unofficially gained a House seat for the Palang Pracharath party in this year’s general election.

Kris Srifa, a Pheu Thai candidate for Phang Nga’s Constituency 2, requested a re-count of the votes from the general election while claiming that there were errors in the initial count.

Kris said that despite having practically all of the lead during the vote-counting, the general election results showed that he lost to a candidate from Palang Pracharath by just 109 votes.
