Thailand is actively addressing plastic waste and environmental challenges through its Roadmap on Plastic Waste Management (2018-2030), aiming for 100% recyclability of plastic waste by 2027. The country promotes circular economy principles via PPP Plastics, focusing on upcycling and sustainable production within the bio-circular-green economy model.

Thailand produces over 3.2 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, mainly PET, PP, and HDPE plastics, with efforts underway to recycle significant amounts locally.

Urban initiatives in Bangkok include reducing single-use plastics by encouraging reusable containers and installing water dispensers to cut bottled water use. The private sector, led by companies like SCG Chemicals, aims to produce up to 1 million tonnes of green polymers by 2030, with bio-based plastics from sugarcane also being explored as an alternative to fossil fuels.

International trade rules, particularly the EU’s upcoming Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, are pushing Thai manufacturers to adopt renewable energy and improve efficiency to stay competitive. Thailand’s strategy aligns environmental goals with economic and trade considerations, fostering a responsible role in global markets. Despite challenges like consumer habits, sustained investment and innovation are essential for scaling sustainable plastic solutions domestically and internationally.
