Drunk Hospital Director Crashes Into TV Crew in Chaiyaphum, Two Seriously Injured
CHAIYAPHUM, Thailand – A hospital director driving under the influence plowed into two television photographers late Tuesday night, leaving both victims seriously injured in a shocking crash near a restaurant in Nai Mueang subdistrict.
The incident occurred at 10:16 p.m. on April 30, when a white Toyota bearing a Ministry of Public Health decal mounted the pavement and crashed into a roadside restaurant where the two victims were about to dine.
Police and rescue units from Chaiyaphum Hospital and the Sawang Khunatham Chaiyaphum Rescue Unit responded quickly. The two injured individuals — Aiempha, 33, and Thossawat Inphuk, 35 — were both TV photographers. They were provided with emergency aid at the scene before being transported to Chaiyaphum Hospital for treatment. Their conditions remain critical.
Hospital Director Identified as Drunk Driver
The driver was identified as the director of Nong Bua Daeng Hospital. According to initial investigations, he had been drinking at a nearby restaurant-bar before the crash. Surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts confirmed that he failed to brake before veering onto the sidewalk and hitting the two men.
Authorities collected physical evidence at the scene and reviewed CCTV footage, which clearly showed the moment of impact.
Alcohol Level Far Exceeds Legal Limit
While awaiting an alcohol test, the director reportedly tried to manipulate the results by drinking water, sour milk, and making frequent visits to the restroom. Despite these efforts, the test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 119 mg%, significantly above Thailand’s legal limit of 50 mg%.
Legal Action Underway
Police Lieutenant Kanti Piansoongnern, Deputy Inspector at Mueang Chaiyaphum Police Station, confirmed that formal charges are being prepared. The hospital director has been summoned for further questioning as investigators compile evidence for prosecution.
The case has drawn public scrutiny due to the suspect’s senior position in the public health sector. The Ministry of Public Health has yet to issue a statement regarding the incident.
