Earthquake hits Chiang Rai

According to the Department of Mineral Resources, a 3.6 magnitude earthquake jolted four districts in Thailand’s northern province of Chiang Rai about 45 minutes after midnight Wednesday night (Thursday morning).

The tremor occurred around two kilometers beneath Ban Dong Mada in Mae Lao district, on the Mae Lao fault line. Although there were no aftershocks, residents in the districts of Mae Lao, Mueang, Pan, and Mae Sruey felt the tremor. So yet, no reports of property damage have been received.

The Meteorological Department, on the other hand, reported receiving ten reports from persons living in one and two-story houses and apartments who felt their beds or houses shake.

Since 2014, more than 300 earthquakes on the Mae Lao fault line have been recorded, with the biggest measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale on May 12, 2014.

There have been 335 tremors with magnitudes less than 3.0, 21 earthquakes with magnitudes between 3.0 and 3.9, and one with magnitudes 4.0-4.9.
