Elevated Expectations with the Appointment of the New Tourism Minister

Following the finalization of the new cabinet line-up, tourism stakeholders are emphasizing the importance of enhanced collaboration among ministries and relevant entities to uphold the goal of positioning Thailand as a key tourism and aviation center.

Sanga Ruangwattanakul, the Khao San Road Business Association president, expressed confidence that the cabinet reshuffle would maintain governmental stability, particularly if the core policies persist. He highlighted the significance of the 2030 Ignite Thailand vision aimed at advancing Thailand’s tourism and aviation sectors.

The recent reshuffle involves the exchange of roles between the culture minister and the tourism minister. Sermsak Pongpanich, the current Culture Minister, is set to assume the role of Tourism Minister, succeeding Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, who will transition to the Culture Ministry. Sanga mentioned that although Sermsak lacks a prominent tourism background, his previous ministerial experience could benefit him in this new position.

Sanga recommended that the new minister enlist tourism experts as consultants and team members for effective decision-making. In response to Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara’s sudden resignation as the foreign minister, Sanga acknowledged the high standards set by Parnpree and urged the new foreign minister to address pending matters like visa-free arrangements with European countries and promoting seamless tourism in Southeast Asia.

To support small and medium-sized tourism operators, Sanga advised Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira to collaborate closely with the Bank of Thailand to address issues such as interest rate reductions. He emphasized the importance of internal dispute resolution by the finance minister to restore public trust.

Thanet Supornsahasrungsi, president of the Association of Chonburi Tourism Federation, highlighted the need for holistic collaboration among ministries, particularly in the transport, tourism, and foreign affairs sectors. He emphasized the potential for Pattaya and Chonburi to enhance tourism opportunities with U-tapao Airport and suggested joint efforts to boost flight numbers and tourism demand.

Thanet recommended incentivizing airlines with discounts on fees and efficient transport arrangements to attract new carriers. Reflecting on the government’s eight months in office, he acknowledged the benefits of visa exemption schemes with various countries but emphasized the need for long-term strategies, including improved safety measures and transportation infrastructure.

He pointed out the importance of addressing obstacles like delays in construction projects, citing the impact on tourism in Hua Hin and Cha-am due to road construction delays along Rama II Road.
