Ethiopian Airlines is set to expand its fleet by acquiring a minimum of eight new aircraft from Boeing, specifically the new 777-9 models. This order also includes the option for an additional 12 planes. As the primary 777X customer in Africa, this move follows the airline’s substantial order of up to 67 aircraft in November, marking the largest purchase ever made by an African carrier from Boeing.

Additionally, Ethiopian Airlines had previously made an agreement with Airbus for potentially receiving 17 A350-900s during the Dubai Airshow. Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, expressed the company’s commitment to staying at the forefront of African aviation through the incorporation of state-of-the-art technologies to elevate their services and enhance customer satisfaction.

The introduction of the 777-9 will not only provide increased operational flexibility but also contribute towards lower fuel consumption and carbon emissions, aligning with the airline’s focus on optimizing performance and promoting environmental sustainability. These recent acquisitions are integral to Ethiopian Airlines’ ambitious Vision 2035 Strategy, which targets the doubling of its fleet size and destination offerings as part of a larger objective to achieve $25 billion in revenue.
