Etihad Airways’ new Airbus A321LR jets are poised to elevate the travel experience beyond traditional business class, as the front row of the single-aisle aircraft is being marketed as ‘first class.’
With an order of up to 40 long-range A321neo models, the Gulf carrier has tentatively set Friday, August 1, 2025, as the launch date for the A321LR flights between Abu Dhabi and Phuket. This route will be part of three daily flights covering the seven-hour journey.
As anticipated, the A321LR will feature lie-flat business class beds, with 14 suites arranged in a 1-1 layout across seven rows.
CEO Antonoaldo Neves previously indicated that the A321LR will feature “two seats in the front of the cabin that provide even greater comfort” than standard business class. However, these Row 1 seats are now listed as first class on Etihad’s website.

That said, the pricing seems significantly off. With a one-way fare of AED22,540 (US$6,140) for first class, compared to AED8,590 (US$2,340) in business class, it appears this may be a glitch in the system as Etihad adjusts its offerings.
Furthermore, the listing for this A321LR flight (EY414) lacks other specific details relevant to the aircraft, such as Wi-Fi, inflight entertainment options, device power availability, and confirmation that the business class features flatbeds.
It remains to be seen whether these two front-row seats will genuinely be marketed as first class, and if so, what amenities will be introduced to enhance the appeal of these premium seats.
Typically, what is often referred to as ‘business plus’ includes additional space and a range of upgrades, such as a significantly larger video screen, personal wardrobe, an ottoman that serves as a companion dining seat, and even a mini-bar.
