Excise department considering new green tax measures

EV stations bangkok one 8 Jan 2024

The Excise Department in Thailand is planning to implement four tax measures this year to promote environmental and social initiatives. These measures include supporting the use of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and their batteries across various industries, proposing a carbon tax on the energy, transport, and industrial sectors, promoting the use of pure ethanol in bioplastics production, and supporting the use of specially-equipped cars to assist the elderly and disabled.

These proposals will be reviewed by the Finance Ministry for further consideration. The government aims to have 600,000 to 700,000 BEVs produced in Thailand by 2030, and the department is also looking into recycling and managing the large number of BEV batteries that will need to be disposed of in the future. Additionally, the department plans to impose a carbon tax to incentivize companies to transition to cleaner energy sources and reduce carbon emissions.

They are also considering a bioethanol tax exemption to support the production of eco-friendly bioplastics. Lastly, there are discussions about implementing a special excise rate for cars designed to assist the elderly and disabled. These tax measures align with Thailand’s goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainability.
