An extensive fire broke out following the explosion of a pyrolysis gasoline (pygas) tank at the premises of Map Ta Phut Tank Terminal Co Ltd in Rayong province on Thursday morning.
The incident, which prompted firefighters to respond at approximately 10.45 am, occurred at the Map Ta Phut Terminal operated by SCG Chemicals Plc (SCGC), the petrochemical division of the Siam Cement Group (SCG). Reports indicated that at least three individuals sustained injuries, leading to the evacuation of nearby residents and the temporary shutdown of terminal activities.
Video recordings from the location displayed a massive blaze engulfing the tank, releasing dense clouds of black smoke into the air.
Located within the Map Ta Phut Port in tambon Map Ta Phut of Rayong’s Muang district, the affected tank, positioned amidst various other large tanks, forms part of a commercial port and storage terminal designated for storing liquid and gaseous petrochemical products.
Pyrolysis gasoline (pygas), a residual product generated during olefin production, serves as a valuable commodity for various applications, including as a premium benzene blending component or for aromatic extraction purposes.
