Flash Flooding Hits Chiang Mai’s Chom Thong District, Roads Cut Off by Landslides
CHIANG MAI, Thailand – May 27, 2025
Heavy rainfall triggered flash flooding and landslides across parts of Chiang Mai’s Chom Thong district late Monday night, damaging roads and forcing residents to evacuate as water levels surged.
By Tuesday morning, the Mae Klang River swelled to 3.8 metres, with floodwaters continuing to rise due to forest runoff from Doi Inthanon and additional inflows from the Mae Hoi and Mae Ya canals, according to the provincial public relations office.
The worst-hit area was Village 4 of Ban Mae Klang in tambon Ban Luang, where emergency crews and local officials helped residents evacuate overnight and salvage their belongings. By 7 a.m., the river had reached 3.863 metres—approaching the official disaster level of 4.5 metres.
Authorities placed nearby communities on high alert as floodwaters overflowed onto roads, complicating evacuation and emergency response efforts.
In a separate incident in Chiang Dao district, a landslide damaged a key road near the Chao Pho Luang Lham Daeng Shrine in tambon Mae Na, cutting access to Muang Khong village. The road was immediately closed and repair crews dispatched, with officials urging motorists to avoid the area and check for route updates before travelling.
Emergency teams remain on standby as rainfall continues and further flooding remains a concern in vulnerable areas.
