Former health minister in Vietnam jailed for 18 years

Former health minister Nguyen Thanh Long has been sentenced to 18 years in prison by a court in Vietnam. He was found guilty of accepting bribes in a scandal involving coronavirus test kits. According to state media, Long was accused of receiving $2.25 million in bribes.

The scandal involved a local company colluding with officials to manipulate prices and deceive the government-funded research unit responsible for producing the test kits. Long reportedly apologized and admitted his wrongdoing during the trial. This case is part of Vietnam’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption, which has led to the investigation of numerous high-profile officials.

Former president and premier Nguyen Xuan Phuc, as well as two deputy prime ministers, are among those who have been forced to resign due to corruption allegations.
