The Transport Ministry has confirmed that there is no intention to relocate Bangkok Port, but it does plan to renovate undeveloped sections and transform them into so-called smart communities.
On Wednesday, Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri shared details about the government’s proposal to develop an entertainment complex at Bangkok Port, commonly known as Klong Toey Port. She noted that since the onset of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s administration, she has reiterated that the government has never aimed to relocate the port. Instead, the focus is on enhancing the port’s facilities to improve water transport and logistics operations.
According to Ms. Manaporn, Bangkok Port spans 2,353 rai of land, with some areas currently underutilized or not generating significant value. Consequently, the Transport Ministry is formulating a plan to maximize the potential of these unused spaces.
She emphasized that while there are plans for an entertainment complex at the port, the entire port will not be relocated. The vision is to develop Bangkok Port into a “big port” by expanding shipping capacity, constructing a sports complex, relocating residents into high-rise buildings, and upgrading the local transport infrastructure.
“Details regarding the entertainment complex and the improvements to certain areas of the port will be outlined following the government’s policy statement presentation in parliament today. Subsequently, various agencies, including the Transport Ministry, will engage in discussions regarding the plan,” stated Ms. Manaporn.
The Port Authority of Thailand is also looking to initiate mixed-use projects at Bangkok Port, aiming to develop “smart communities” where residents of Bangkok’s Klong Toey district can reside in taller buildings and transform the surrounding areas into a transport and facility hub.
