Government delays the approval of the cannabis ban legistlation

cannabis bangkok one Feb 13 2024

The government has decided to postpone the approval of a proposed bill aimed at prohibiting the recreational usage of cannabis, citing the necessity for further consultations with relevant parties. This delay was confirmed by Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew following the cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

Mr. Cholnan explained that the Ministry of Public Health was unable to present the bill to the cabinet on Tuesday as they required more time to gather additional perspectives.

During the May 2023 election campaign, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin committed to restricting cannabis solely for medical and health-related purposes due to concerns about addiction. Notably, the prior government introduced groundbreaking legislation in the mid-2022, positioning Thailand as the first country in Asia to decriminalize cannabis and permitting the establishment of numerous marijuana and cannabis-related establishments.

In a recent statement, Mr. Cholnan emphasized that the updated cannabis and hemp control bill maintains its central feature, stipulating that the substance is intended exclusively for medical treatment. However, it will unequivocally state that any form of recreational use will not be permitted.
