Government expecting 8 million Chinese tourist this year

Chinese tourist bangkok one Jan 5 2024

Thailand is anticipating an influx of 8 million tourists from China in 2024, following an agreement between the two countries to permanently waive visa requirements starting in March. This move is expected to lead to an increase in flights, resulting in lower ticket prices and a boost in Chinese arrivals to Thailand.

In September, Thailand temporarily lifted visa requirements for Chinese tourists. Last year, out of a total of 28 million tourist arrivals, Thailand welcomed 3.51 million visitors from China. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Thailand received a record 39 million arrivals, with 11 million coming from China.

Tourism plays a crucial role in Thailand’s economy, contributing 1.2 trillion baht (US$34.63 billion) in revenue in 2023, according to government data.

To further promote tourism, Thailand continues to implement measures to attract visitors. Recently, the government approved a reduction in taxes on alcoholic beverages and entertainment venues. Additionally, nightclubs have been granted extended opening hours from 2am to 4am.

Despite these efforts, Thai tourism operators are facing challenges in achieving the government’s goal of attracting 40 million foreign arrivals. High travel expenses, sluggish demand from populous markets like China and Russia, as well as competition from neighboring countries, pose difficulties for reaching this target.
