Pro-cannabis groups are increasing pressure on the government and planning a rally at the Ministry of Public Health on Thursday. They demand that the ministry scientifically prove why cannabis should not be considered a narcotic drug.
In contrast, farmers licensed to grow cannabis before its decriminalization in 2022 support the government’s decision to reclassify cannabis as a narcotic. They claim that legalizing cannabis cultivation led to a significant price drop due to oversupply of the product.
During the planned rally at the ministry, the pro-cannabis groups will request scientific evidence comparing the benefits and risks of cannabis to alcohol and cigarettes. Prasitchai Nunual, from the Cannabis Future Network, emphasizes the importance of basing any decision regarding cannabis reclassification on solid scientific evidence.
Although the government may consider reclassifying cannabis, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin suggests that its medical use could still be allowed. The decision will involve input from various parties and the final judgment will be left to the Narcotics Control Board.
Farmers who were growing cannabis before its decriminalization are facing challenges, as prices have plummeted, leading to significant oversupply. Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul mentions that any changes to the legal status of cannabis will be based on a formal study reviewed by expert panels.
