The government plans to establish drug-free zones across the country based on the successful models from Roi Et and Nan, with a target set for completion by September 30. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced this initiative during a recent mobile cabinet meeting, emphasizing the collaboration among various agencies to combat drug-related issues in Thailand.
Authorities will focus on cracking down on drug dealers, offering treatment, and rehabilitation services to addicts to facilitate their successful reintegration into society. Mr. Srettha urged provincial governors, particularly mentioning Nakhon Ratchasima, to adopt the successful drug suppression models from Roi Et and Nan within their respective regions.
The existing model, which designates high-drug prevalence areas as zero-tolerance zones, is currently operational in Roi Et’s Thawatchaburi district and Nan’s Tha Wang Pha district. Mr. Srettha highlighted the effectiveness of this approach in coordinating efforts across all state agencies in combatting drug issues.
Emphasizing the urgency of combating drug threats to society, Mr. Srettha called for coordinated efforts among provincial governors, law enforcement, the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, and other relevant agencies to conduct thorough inspections in high-risk areas, identify drug users for rehabilitation, and prosecute drug traffickers.
The government outlined roles for key entities such as the police, Ministries of Interior, Public Health, and Defence in leading the rehabilitation efforts, with support from the Department of Mental Health and other related institutions in overseeing the rehabilitation process. Mr. Srettha also urged the ministries of education and innovation to implement preventative measures to deter children from drug use.
