Health Authorities Alleviate Concerns Regarding Recent Increase in Influenza Cases

Influenza has resulted in the deaths of 14 individuals and affected over 180,000 others across the country since the start of this year, as per the Department of Disease Control (DDC).

Director-General Dr. Thongchai Keeratihatthayakorn addressed concerns circulating online about severe influenza strains by emphasizing that most cases lead to mild symptoms and can be managed appropriately. However, some cases may develop concurrent illnesses, increasing the risk of fatality.

Dr. Thongchai mentioned that a team from Disease Control Office 5 in Ratchaburi collaborated with local health offices to conduct a detailed analysis of flu patients, with a comprehensive report expected soon.

Data from the Epidemiology Division between Jan 1 and June 20 documented 186,900 flu cases and 14 deaths, with fatalities reported in various provinces. Surveillance data from Sept 1, 2021, to June 16 highlighted different influenza strains circulating among the population, with A/H3N2 being predominant.

While influenza is a common occurrence, it can exacerbate underlying conditions like pneumonia, asthma, encephalitis, and bacterial infections, further noted Dr. Thongchai.
