Health Officials Warn: Avoid Raw Milk Amid Avian Flu Concerns

The Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health, has issued a clarification regarding warnings against consuming raw milk following the detection of avian influenza A (H5N1) in mammals. The virus has been identified in dairy cows, tigers, and pigs, signaling its ability to spread beyond birds.

Globally, avian influenza infections in mammals are rising, with severe cases reported in Cambodia, where the virus has a fatality rate of 40-50%. Given Thailand’s proximity to Cambodia and frequent cross-border travel and animal trade, strict monitoring measures have been implemented.

Avoid Raw Milk for Safety

Thailand has a surveillance system in place to track avian influenza in humans, animals, and wildlife. Authorities are expanding risk assessments, now including individuals who have had exposure to dairy farms or unusual animal deaths. The Department of Livestock Development has been notified of the necessary precautions.

While visiting farms remains permitted, officials urge the public to follow strict safety guidelines. The Department of Disease Control advises consuming only fully cooked food, particularly poultry, eggs, and dairy products, and avoiding raw or undercooked options like raw milk. Pasteurized dairy products are recommended as a safer alternative.

To minimize risks, individuals should avoid direct contact with sick or deceased poultry, pigs, or cattle. Proper hygiene, including wearing masks and gloves and washing hands after handling animals, is essential. Anyone experiencing symptoms within 14 days of exposure should seek immediate medical attention.
