At the Suvarnabhumi international airport’s cargo terminal, Thai drug and airport interdiction officials discovered two packages containing approximately 1.2kg of heroin that were meant for an Australian recipient.
Although the amount confiscated is tiny, Wichai Chaimongkhon, secretary general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB), stated today (Monday) that it is an indication of the cooperation between Thai and Australian illegal drug trafficking networks.
He claimed that the ONCB promptly informed the Australian federal police stationed at the Australian Embassy in Bangkok following the seizure in the hopes that their Australian counterparts would investigate further.
Airport Interdiction Task Force agents grew suspicious when they saw the two thicker-than-normal packages that were claimed to contain “A3 inkjet paper” but were actually heroin. When they were opened, they discovered four foil-wrapped sachets of heroin. The ONCB reports that since the beginning of this year, shipments headed for Australia have been intercepted by the Airport and Seaport Interdiction Task Forces, yielding 973.4kg of crystal methamphetamine (Ice) and 70.7kg of heroin.
OBCB officials have arrested several suspected drug traffickers and seized their assets as a result of the numerous seizures.
