ICAO and CAAT collaborate to cut carbon emissions

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) are collaborating to reduce aviation-related carbon emissions in order to achieve zero emissions by the year 2050.

The agency’s intention to work with ICAO was confirmed by CAAT Director Suthipong Kongpool during the 2023 ICAO Environmental Regional Seminar for the Asia Pacific Region. According to him, the CAAT would work with ICAO member nations in the Asia Pacific area to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in accordance with a resolution adopted at the 41st Session of the ICAO Assembly in October 2022.

The director claims that the CAAT has already put into practice the ICAO’s Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, a legal framework created to help achieve environmental objectives more affordably and with greater flexibility.

In accordance with this plan, airlines must disclose their carbon emissions to CAAT and, if they can reduce their gas emissions, will receive carbon credits. The CAAT director continued by stating that the organization is researching a number of strategies to lower emissions, including enhancing operations, realigning air traffic, and looking for more effective techniques or technologies. The aviation industry’s implementations would be costly, he recognized, but the outcomes will be worthwhile, and he advised aviation businesses to become ready for changing conditions.
