London airport announces new procedures

Travelers departing from London-City Airport (LCY) will abide by new regulations as they pass through security.

For the first time since March 4, 2006, travelers will be able to pass through airport security with fluids, gels, and pastes that have a volume more than 100ml.

Also, passengers will no longer need to segregate their toiletries into see-through containers or remove electronic devices from their hand luggage in order to take two liters of liquids. The updated procedures are made possible by the new, cutting-edge scanners that London City Airport installed.

Staff members can check passengers’ luggage from every angle thanks to the C3 Scanners’ ability to take high-resolution 3D photos of the baggage.

When police in the UK thwarted a terrorist group’s attempt to blow up planes using liquid explosives, strict regulations around liquids have been in place for more than 15 years.

The 100ml limit was raised to two liters at Teesside International Airport (MME) for the first time in the UK in March 2023.

Following years of thorough testing, other London airports like Gatwick and Heathrow intend to quickly implement the new technology.

The BBC was informed by London City Airport’s chief operating officer, Alison FitzGerald, that the workers had received updated training in the new system.

The system can distinguish between a non-hazardous and a dangerous liquid, the COO stated, adding that the degree of processing through the X-ray is even more secure than it was previously. The entire process is speedier since you no longer need to empty your bag and place it in many trays; instead, you can place just one bag in one tray without having to remove anything.
