Marriage equality bill to be passed to Parliament in December

Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin announced on Tuesday that the cabinet has approved draft legislation on marriage equality in Thailand. The bill is expected to be presented to parliament in December. Thailand has a vibrant LGBTQ+ community.

But activists argue that existing laws and traditional institutions do not adequately address the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals and same-sex couples. If the bill is passed by parliament and granted royal assent, Thailand will become the third Asian country, following Taiwan and Nepal, to recognize same-sex marriage.

Last year, similar legislation was discussed in parliament but did not pass before the session ended. With a new government in place, those bills lapsed.
