Meet Chef Garima Arora

Chef Garima Arora: Until the current season of MasterChef India aired, many people were unaware of this exceptional Indian female cook. She is a famous for becoming the first Indian woman to obtain a Michelin star.

She studied at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and has worked with chefs such as René Redzepi of Copenhagen’s renowned Noma restaurant and Chef Gaggan Anand. The World’s 50 Best Restaurants named her Asia’s Best Female Chef of the Year the following year.

In 2019, her Bangkok restaurant Gaa was placed 16th on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list. Garima was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Garima’s interest in cooking began when she was a child, when she enjoyed helping her mother in the kitchen. She spent a lot of time in the kitchen with her brother Nauroze Arora, learning about the enchanted world of flavors and spices.

Garima is married to pilot Rahul Verma, and the couple has a daughter together. She earned a Bachelor of Mass Media in Journalism from the University of Mumbai before changing careers. She dabbled in journalism for about six months before discovering that the culinary arts were her true passion.

Along the way, she gained a range of experiences, beginning with work at various restaurants in India and abroad. Because of her dedication and desire, she has worked at prestigious institutions such as The Oberoi hotel chain and Bangkok’s Gaggan, a Michelin-starred restaurant.

Garima graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris with a grand diploma in food and patisserie in 2010. She later worked with chefs such as Gaggan Anand, Gordon Ramsay, and René Redzepi of Noma in Copenhagen.

Garima opened Gaa, a three-story restaurant in Bangkok, in April 2017. At Gaa, she expertly combines contemporary tasting menus with traditional Indian cooking methods, creating a symphony of flavors that captivates customers.

This notable achievement was both a watershed moment for women in the culinary business and a testimonial to Garima’s talent. As the first Indian woman chef, she created history by winning the prestigious Michelin Star. The World’s 50 Best Restaurants named her Asia’s Best Female Chef of the Year the following year. In 2019, her Bangkok restaurant Gaa was placed 16th on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list.
