Migrant workers get extension of stay

According to deputy government spokeswoman Traisulee Traisoranakul, migrant workers from four nearby countries would be permitted to remain in Thailand through July 31 while their employers arrange for the renewal of their work licenses.
According to her, on Wednesday, the Thai Cabinet decided to extend the deadline for the renewal of work permits for individuals from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

According to a previous Cabinet decision dated February 7, migrant workers from certain nations who intend to continue working in Thailand must submit their application for a permit renewal by February 13 in order for the Department of Employment to receive the required paperwork by May 15.

However, it was discovered that an estimated 500,000 migrant laborers were unable to fulfill the deadline. In order to give their employers more time to make necessary arrangements for the renewal of their work permits, the Cabinet decided to extend the deadline.

Traisulee stated on Thursday that in order for Thailand to recover economically from the Covid-19 outbreak, it needs migrant workers from those nearby nations. The deadline extension is anticipated to lessen the labor crisis Thai companies are currently facing.

She continued by saying that if the workers were employed lawfully, they might be covered by the labor legislation, which guarantees employee rights and welfare benefits. Additionally, current data on migrant workers would aid the Thai government in managing migrant labor more effectively.

The deadline has been extended for migrant workers who abandoned their prior positions but were unable to find new ones, those who are overstaying their welcome, and those whose visas have expired or who entered Thailand illegally.
