Moriya Jutanugarn takes title in Portland

Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand captured the Portland Classic title on Sunday in Oregon, closing out the tournament with a stellar performance that included birdies on four of her last seven holes.

Finishing with a final-round score of 6-under-par 66 at Columbia Edgewater Country Club, Moriya recorded her only bogey of the tournament on the final hole, concluding the event with a total score of 22-under 266—two shots clear of Angel Yin (69), Russia’s Nataliya Guseva (68), and South Korea’s Narin An (66).

An vaulted into the lead at 21 under after hitting a hole-in-one on the par-3 16th hole. However, she could only manage a par and a bogey afterward, setting the clubhouse lead at 20 under before Moriya surged ahead.

“Every win is special, and it’s been a while since my last one,” Moriya remarked. “Being in contention for the last few days feels great, and I feel like I haven’t been in that position for some time.”

Starting the day three strokes behind the leaders, the 30-year-old improved upon her Saturday round of 64 by climbing the leaderboard, highlighted by three consecutive birdies from Nos. 12-14. Her seventh birdie came at the par-4 17th, providing her with a comfortable cushion.

Moriya was determined to finish the tournament without a bogey, but her par putt on the 18th hole narrowly missed the cup.

“I’m not specifically trying to finish bogey-free,” Moriya said, “but when you have momentum and everything seems to be going your way, it feels good.”

This victory marks Moriya’s third LPGA win and her first at a non-team event since 2018. Previously, she won the 2021 Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational alongside her sister Ariya, a 12-time tour winner. Ariya shot a 65 on Sunday and tied for ninth at 17 under, and she was seen joyfully congratulating her older sister on her achievement.

“I’m so excited and proud of her because I know she’s been waiting for this for a long time,” Ariya expressed. “Even though we won together in 2021, she always said, ‘I want to win on my own.’ It’s great that we won as a team, but she’s been through a lot of ups and downs lately. She’s really struggled this year, and this tournament shows she truly deserves this win because she never gave up.”

An, aiming for her first LPGA title, explained that she did not see her hole-in-one from the 16th tee. Her tee shot was perfectly executed, landing at the front of the green and hopping right into the hole.

“I could hear the crowd reaction from the green—first a ‘Whooo,’ then a ‘Rahhhh’. It was amazing,” An recounted.

Sofia Garcia from Paraguay (68), So Mi Lee from South Korea (69), and Polly Mack from Germany (70) all tied for fifth at 19 under, while second-round leader Dewi Weber from the Netherlands shot a 72, finishing eighth at 18 under.
