New Overpasses Planned to Combat Bangkok’s Chronic Traffic Congestion
Bangkok, Thailand — The Transport Ministry has announced plans to construct a series of new overpasses in and around Bangkok in a bid to alleviate the city’s notorious traffic congestion, particularly during rush hour.
Phongkawin Jungrungreangkit, an adviser to the transport minister, said the projects aim to improve traffic flow in high-density areas. The initiatives will be jointly managed by the Department of Highways and the Department of Rural Roads.
Several projects are already underway. The Department of Highways reported that construction on the Bang Khun Thian–Ekkachai segment of Highway No. 35 (Thon Buri–Pak Tho) will be completed next month, with a trial run scheduled for the end of the year.
Also under development are two major flyovers—No. 3901 and No. 3902—spanning from Pathum Thani to Ayutthaya provinces. These are expected to be completed by August 2026. Another flyover at the junction of highways No. 3 and No. 3256 in Samut Prakan is on track for completion by February 2026.
The Department of Rural Roads is also pressing ahead with three key flyover projects in the Bangkok metropolitan area. One of the largest is an 8.2-kilometre overpass connecting Bang Phli Yai and Bang Phli districts in Samut Prakan, due for completion in December 2026.
Additionally, a dual-section flyover linking Bang Bo and Bang Sao Thong districts—measuring 6.5 km and 3.025 km respectively—is scheduled for completion in March 2027.
These infrastructure developments are part of the government’s broader effort to modernize Bangkok’s transportation network and reduce daily commute times for millions of residents.
