New Zealand tourist faces blacklisting after assault on police officer

In response to a violent incident involving a New Zealand traffic police officer in Phuket, two New Zealand tourists are facing serious consequences and potential blacklisting by Thailand.

Deputy police chief Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn announced that Oscar Day, 36, and Hamish Day, 34, will be banned from returning to Thailand after the conclusion of legal proceedings against them. The directive was issued to the immigration police chief in Phuket, emphasizing that the individuals will not be permitted re-entry into the country.

Having arrived in Thailand on March 11 with permission to remain until April 9 under the 30-day visa exemption policy for New Zealand citizens, the brothers now face multiple charges, including robbery, resisting police, assaulting a police officer, driving without a license, and bribery.

The charges stemmed from an incident where Oscar and Hamish Day allegedly attacked Police Senior Sergeant Major Somsak Noo-iad in Muang district’s Chalong Station last Saturday. Initially signaled to stop for riding recklessly in a community area and failing to adhere to lane rules, the brothers attempted to flee on their motorcycles. Subsequently caught by the officer, a scuffle ensued, leading to the officer being pushed to the ground.

Authorities plan to request an extension of the New Zealanders’ detention from the Phuket Provincial Court as they pursue the legal case. Due to concerns of potential flight risk and their lack of permanent residency in Thailand, police will contest any bail application put forth by their legal representatives.

Identified as Laurence and Katrina Day, the parents of the accused individuals, hold significant business and property assets. The father expressed distress over the situation and shared hope for a favorable resolution, as reported by The New Zealand Herald.
