Online gambling should be legalized to increase government revenue

Online gambling should be legalised to increase government revenue

According to Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin, legalizing online gambling will enhance tax income.

Prior to Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, Mr. Somsak, who is in charge of the Justice Ministry, was speaking with media. Following information that eight police officers were involved in online gambling businesses, cybercrime police conducted raids at 30 locations across six provinces on Monday.

Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn, the deputy national police commander, owned five of them.

The suspected participants in the “Betflix” online gambling network were the targets. Thailand prohibits the majority of gambling activities.

“More types of gambling, such as wagering on football, should be legalized. Currently, [gambling taxes] don’t provide any benefits to the state or the general public, he claimed.

“It would be beneficial because it would help increase state revenue if these were taxed like other gambling activities the Interior Ministry has licensed, including bull and cock fighting.”

He stated that he will talk with the Strategic Transformation Office about the matter and perhaps present a suggestion to the cabinet later.

“Gambling should be legalized since it entails significant financial investment in internet gambling. The deputy prime minister suggested that the government may raise taxes and utilize the proceeds to aid the elderly, children from disadvantaged backgrounds, and persons with disabilities.

According to Prasert Jantararuangtong, minister of digital economy and society, 4,400 online gambling websites have been shut down this year, and cyber crime police have dealt with 6,000 cases linked to the issue.

He claimed that both operators of gambling websites and bettors face penalties and jail time.
