Operators in Songkhla advocate for establishment of a casino near the border

Tourism operators in Songkhla are urging the government to consider constructing an entertainment complex that includes a legal casino within their province to address a decline in tourism in border areas and to reduce reliance on Malaysian tourists. Songchai Mungprasithichai, president of the Songkhla Tourism Promotion Association, highlighted the potential for attracting tourists interested in gambling at Ban Dan Nok and around the Sadao checkpoint, which serve as key entry points in the southern region.

Despite Hat Yai being a popular tourism hub, Ban Dan Nok has seen lower tourist numbers, particularly from Malaysian visitors. Concerns were raised about inconsistent tourist flows, with a significant proportion coming from Malaysia during specific periods like festivals. The demand for casino tourism in Songkhla is deemed to be significant, drawing parallels with tourist traffic heading to Genting, known for its legal casinos and resorts.

In March, Songkhla reported tourism income amounting to 3.7 billion baht, positioning it as the 10th highest earning province in Thailand. To promote responsible gambling, suggestions were made to implement clear regulations for screening local gamblers, including income criteria, and to involve local communities in deciding the establishment of a casino complex based on comprehensive evaluations of the social implications.

Moreover, the article emphasized the need to address the economic impact on local communities and diversify tourism markets by introducing attractions beyond gambling, such as hotels and shopping facilities. By potentially attracting tourists from various nationalities through initiatives like establishing direct flights and catering to diverse preferences in entertainment choices, Songkhla aims to enhance its tourism offerings beyond traditional seaside destinations.
