Panic in Nong Khai Over Suspected Fake Chicken Eggs

Nong Khai, Thailand — Concern is spreading in the northeastern province of Nong Khai after residents claimed they were duped into purchasing what they believe to be fake chicken eggs, prompting calls for government investigation.

Jatuphon Phusri, 42, a resident of the Non Phu Khao Thong community in Rattana Wapee district, raised the alarm on Tuesday, May 13, after he and about 30 other families bought eggs from a Thai couple selling from an SUV.

The vendors reportedly offered large eggs at an unusually low price of 130 baht per tray of 30. They told locals the eggs were from meat-bred chickens, which explained their larger size and slightly cracked white shells.

However, suspicions arose when residents began boiling the eggs and noticed disturbing abnormalities. According to Jatuphon, the egg whites had a jelly-like texture, while the yolks were slippery, musty-smelling, and darker than usual. Some locals feared the eggs were artificial, possibly made from synthetic materials like gelatin or plastic. Jatuphon also speculated that the cracks on the shells were actually seams from molded fake shells.

Several buyers returned the eggs and demanded refunds, which the vendors reportedly provided before hastily leaving the area.

Jatuphon and other concerned residents have called on relevant authorities to investigate the incident and verify whether the eggs were genuine or counterfeit, in hopes of preventing similar scams in other communities.
