The Transport Ministry is setting its sights on transforming Phuket into the premier transportation hub of the Andaman region, with the goal of positioning the island as a model for logistics and mobility development throughout southern Thailand.

Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced the initiative on Monday during a high-level meeting dedicated to reviewing nine major infrastructure projects with a combined budget of 130 billion baht. Attendees included Phuket governor Saransak Srikruanet and representatives from key agencies such as the Department of Highways, Marine Department, and the State Railway of Thailand.

Key projects seeking funding comprise the 16.76-billion-baht Kathu–Patong Tunnel, which is expected to reduce travel time between the airport and Patong to 20 minutes; the 46.75-billion-baht Muang Mai–Koh Kaeaw–Kathu Expressway; and the 1.3-billion-baht Muang Mai–Airport Junction flyover.

Other planned developments include the expansion of Highway 4027, traffic management improvements, and the 46-billion-baht Phase 1 Light Rail Transit system, designed to connect Phuket Airport with Chalong Intersection. Additional projects involve establishing the Andaman Port, linking Krabi, Phangnga, and Phuket; constructing a new cruise terminal for large vessels; and advancing Phase 2 of the Phuket Airport Development Project, which aims to increase annual passenger capacity from 12.5 million to 18 million.

“These projects will be transformative for Phuket over the next five years,” Mr. Phiphat stated. “They will alleviate traffic congestion, shorten travel times, and position the island as a leading global hub for smart mobility.”

Kongsak Khoopongsakorn, president of Phuket Chamber of Commerce, called on the government to accelerate the implementation process, emphasizing the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades to address daily traffic issues.
