PM 2.5 in several Bangkok districts reach orange level.

PM 2.5 bangkok Jan 28 2024

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has issued a warning about a surge in fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5), which will cause at least 17 districts in Bangkok to enter the “orange zone” today. The Pollution Control Department (PCD) expects these high levels of dust to persist until Tuesday.

In a Facebook post, the BMA cautioned that PM2.5 levels would reach the orange zone, indicating unhealthy levels for individuals with pre-existing health conditions, in 17 districts. These districts include Laksi, Chatuchak, Klong Toey, Phra Khanong, Bang Na, Phaya Thai, Din Daeng, Huai Khwang, Klong Sam Wa, Min Buri, Saphan Sung, Taling Chan, Bangkok Noi, Thawi Watthana, Bang Khae, Bang Bon, and Nong Khaem.

Additionally, the PCD has identified 133 PM2.5 “hot spots” across Thailand and 2,447 hot spots in Cambodia, as reported by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA). Concerns have been raised that the dust pollution situation in Cambodia could have an impact on Thailand and Bangkok, potentially leading to higher PM2.5 levels in the capital. This is because Bangkok is expected to experience less wind, which could hinder the dispersion of haze, tomorrow and Tuesday.

To mitigate the pollution, the PCD and the BMA are urging residents in central areas of Bangkok, in particular, to choose public transportation over driving. They are also advising people to avoid any burning activities that could contribute to the air pollution.
