PM asks Microsoft to invest in a regional data center in Thailand

During an informal discussion with executives from Microsoft on Thursday evening in New York, the Prime Minister of Thailand, Srettha Thavisin, extended an invitation to Microsoft to invest in the development of Thailand as a regional data center.

According to a knowledgeable source who was close to the prime minister’s delegation, Microsoft executives stated that Thailand has the potential to become a data center in Southeast Asia and that the sizable technology company will support both the private and public sectors in their use of cloud technology. This information came from a person who was in close proximity to the delegation.

The executives from Microsoft believe that the use of cloud technology will improve not just the capabilities of technology experts in Thailand (such as engineers and IT professionals), but also the competitiveness of the country as a whole.

According to the source, the construction of a regional data center will require an investment of approximately 500 billion baht, and the facility will require approximately 500 megawatts of electricity to remain active.

Microsoft is currently weighing its options for where to place its investments in such a project. The three countries that are leading the pack right now are Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. At the same time, Tesla is reportedly considering making its investment plans in either Thailand, Malaysia, or India.
