Police undertake a campaign to target illegal weapons

In 47 provinces across Thailand, Thai police today began an operation to deal with dealers and smugglers who deal in illegal firearms and modified weapons.
At the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) in Nonthaburi, more than 800 police officers have been stationed, along with a “Hanuman” special weapons and tactics team.

The action comes in response to the event on October 3, when a young shooter opened fire inside Bangkok’s opulent Siam Paragon shopping mall, leaving two people dead and at least five more injured. Later it was discovered that the shooter was only 14 years old.
Because gun crimes are increasing in frequency, CIB commissioner Pol Lt-General Jirabhop Bhuridej has ordered the police to detain sellers and smugglers of illegal firearms.

He claimed that since most illegal firearms are transferred through online platforms, action must be taken quickly to address the problem.

The operation’s outcomes, he continued, would be published at a later time.
