Police warns of fake government websites

A police spokesperson has issued a warning to the public regarding the dangers of fake government websites and has urged individuals to report any suspicious sites.

Pol Maj Gen Siriwat Deepor, the deputy spokesman, stated on Sunday that the Royal Thai Police (RTP) have observed an increase in fraudsters creating web addresses with the “.go.th” domain extension, which is typically associated with government agencies, in order to deceive people into believing they are legitimate.

These scammers manipulate the URLs by placing the “.go.th” domain at the end of a web address, known as the path, to mislead careless internet users. Pol Maj Gen Siriwat provided an example of a fraudulent government site, https://dif.link/www.ccid1.ccib.go.th, which has already been taken down by the police.

In response, the RTP released a guide titled “How to Verify Web Domains.” According to the guide, genuine government websites, such as https://www.royalthaipolice.go.th, should have the “.go.th” portion following “https://” and directly before a forward slash (“/”) if it exists. Additionally, if the URL begins with “www,” there should not be a forward slash preceding the “.go.th.”

Pol Maj Gen Siriwat mentioned that the RTP is collaborating with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES) to secure court orders aimed at shutting down fake websites and prosecuting offenders. Victims of cybercrimes can file complaints online at www.thaipoliceonline.go.th or contact the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CIB) via their 24-hour hotline at 1441.
