Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew has approved proposed legislation in Thailand regarding cannabis, clarifying that its use will be strictly limited to medical purposes. The new law will promote the use of cannabis for various health benefits while imposing measures to control and prevent its recreational use.

The legislation may take the form of a ministerial regulation or be determined by a panel. If the cabinet endorses the bill, it will proceed to the Lower House for consideration. The regulation by the Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine Department, which designates cannabis as a controlled herb, may need to be revised to align with the new law. The requirement of a medical certificate for purchasing cannabis has not been included in the bill but will likely be determined by additional laws.

The law does not intend to revoke licenses for legally registered cannabis stores, but these establishments will only be allowed to sell cannabis parts that comply with Thai regulations. Under the upcoming legislation, products containing more than 0.2% THC by weight will be considered illegal.

Dr. Cholnan also noted that the law will aid law enforcement in apprehending individuals who misuse cannabis for recreational purposes. In a separate matter, a significant drug seizure took place in Ireland, involving cannabis parcels originating from Thailand as well as France and Spain.
