Russian travelers now get 90 days without a visa

At a meeting in Thailand, the Cabinet decided to let Russian tourists stay for up to 90 days instead of 30 days, starting November 1, 2023.

Main Points

In order to get more tourists during the winter, the Thai Cabinet has increased the short-term stay limit for Russian tourists from 30 days to 90 days.

The rise in visa-free stays is seen as a good thing and a sign of friendship between Thailand and Russia. There may be room for talks to improve relations between the two countries.

With almost 1 million visitors between January and October 2023, Russian tourists were the fifth most popular group of foreign tourists in Thailand. This shows how important they are to the country’s tourism industry.

The goal of this move is to boost tourism and bring in more Russian tourists during the winter. The Deputy Prime Minister stressed how important it was to keep tourists safe and stop people from overstaying their visas.

Between January and October 2023, 994,431 Russian tourists came to Thailand, making them the fifth most popular group of foreign tourists. Before the outbreak, there were more Russian tourists in Thailand than in any other European country in 2019.

Thailand’s Phuket has long been a popular place to get away from Russia’s hard winter. However, a rise in home sales since President Vladimir Putin ordered mobilization in September 2022 suggests that many people plan to stay longer than just a vacation.

The Thai Real Estate Information Center told Al Jazeera that Russians bought almost 40% of all condos sold to foreigners in Phuket last year.

We would like to ask: what about the rest of the world that wants to come here? all should have the same visa-free 90 days
