Severe Storm in Bangkok Kills One as Tree Crushes Shelter

BANGKOK — A powerful storm that swept through the Thai capital on May 11 tragically claimed the life of a local caretaker after a large tree collapsed onto his shelter during the early morning hours.

The deceased, 51-year-old Buala, was found with a severe head injury under a fallen sa-kae tree in a property spanning about two rai in Soi Phutthamonthon Sai 3, Soi 18, located in Salathammasop, Thawi Watthana district.

Incident Details:

  • Time: Early hours of May 11
  • Victim: Buala, 51, male caretaker
  • Location: Temporary shelter crushed by uprooted tree
  • Cause: Strong winds and heavy rain from the storm

Police Lieutenant Colonel Pipatchai Panphim of Thammasala Police Station led the investigation. Emergency responders and forensic experts from Siriraj Hospital were dispatched to the scene.

Eyewitness Account:

Duan Pongchaliow (62), a nearby resident, reported that the storm brought intense wind gusts and continuous rainfall, toppling the large tree. Duan initially investigated the crash but saw no signs of injury. An hour later, he returned to discover Buala trapped and unresponsive.

The victim was known locally as a caretaker of the premises, according to KhaoSod.

Authorities have not reported any other casualties, but the incident has prompted renewed calls for inspection of large roadside and residential trees as Bangkok enters its monsoon season.
