Despite facing criticism, the government remains committed to progressing with its Land Bridge megaproject and plans to attract foreign investors. It pledges to prioritize the environmental impact, particularly in headwater areas.

Following a mobile cabinet meeting in Ranong, government spokesman Chai Wacharonke stated that the government will continue to invite foreign investors to participate in the project. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has already presented the scheme at international events such as the Apec Summit, the Asean-Japan Commemorative Summit, and the World Economic Forum.

According to Mr. Chai, the project is currently in the presentation stage, with studies being provided to investors to ensure mutual understanding. The government intends to involve global experts in port management and logistics systems in the investment process.

While the Transport Ministry has conducted preliminary research indicating the project’s viability, additional studies will be carried out to assess the environmental impact, especially in the Level 1A head watershed area in Chumphon province’s Phato basin. Mr. Chai assured that comprehensive environmental studies will be conducted when the government proceeds with implementation.

Prime Minister Srettha has emphasized the government’s commitment to address any potential impact on the public and to adequately compensate those affected to prevent harm to citizens.

Addressing concerns about the adequacy of information provided to investors, Mr. Chai noted that no company attending roadshows for the project has raised questions about the depth of information. He also mentioned that the media, both in the US and Europe, has not criticized the Thai government for insufficient information.

Additionally, Dubai World, a multinational company, has shown interest in investing in and observing the potential construction site for the Land Bridge project.

In a related development, the prime minister has instructed many state agencies to make significant improvements to infrastructure, including ports and roads in Ranong. The aim is to enhance readiness and modernize provinces in alignment with the government’s tourism policy.
