Taiwan quake bangkok one April 3 2024

A powerful 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Taiwan, causing significant damage in Taipei and triggering a tsunami alert for regions in southern Japan and the Philippines. The tremor, which originated near Hualien, led to collapsed buildings and reports of individuals being trapped in the aftermath. The effects of the earthquake were felt as far as Shanghai.

The quake’s epicenter was located off the eastern coastline of Taiwan, specifically in Hualien county. Japan issued evacuation advisories for coastal areas in Okinawa, anticipating tsunami waves of up to 3 meters along its southwestern coast. Similarly, the Philippines alerted residents in coastal regions to move to higher ground.

In China’s Fujian province, cities including Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou, and Ningde reported feeling the earthquake. Despite the significant seismic activity, the Taipei city government indicated no significant damage, with the city’s transportation systems quickly resuming operations. Additionally, the Southern Taiwan Science Park, home to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, reported no disruptions to its operations.

This earthquake was deemed the most powerful to strike Taiwan since 1999, when a 7.6 magnitude quake claimed thousands of lives. The United States Geological Survey provided a map indicating the earthquake’s epicenter.
