Thailand’s Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is considering removing sugar from the list of price-controlled products, pending agreement from stakeholders. This decision comes after protests from sugarcane millers due to an increase in sugar prices for the 2023-24 harvest.
A committee will be formed to address the sugar price issue, and a representative assured that millers won’t suspend operations. Thailand is a significant sugar exporter, but the industry faces challenges like price fluctuations, environmental concerns, labor shortages, and trade disputes.
