Tesla will build a Megafactory in Shanghai, the electric car company said on Twitter on Sunday.
The factory will be able to make 10,000 Megapacks per year, which are massive batteries used to store vast amounts of electricity. The new facility was unveiled with a photo of a signing ceremony in China.
Elon Musk said on Twitter, “Tesla opening Megapack facility in Shanghai to supplement output of Megapack factory in California.”
According to Chinese state media agency Xinhua, the electric automaker will break ground in the third quarter of this year and begin manufacturing in the second quarter of 2024.
Tesla has a Megafactory in Lathrop, California, that can produce 10,000 Megapack units per year, which is comparable to 40 gigatonnes of energy storage.
