Thai Airways 787 order a record

Thai Airways bangkok one Feb 20 2024

Boeing, the US aircraft manufacturer, has revealed that Thai Airways International’s order for 45 Dreamliner aircraft marks the largest in the history of Thailand’s aviation industry.

With the aim of renewing and expanding its fleet with more efficient jets, Thai Airways has selected the 787-9 to facilitate its long-term strategy. The airline also intends to utilize these aircraft to open new routes, expanding its reach to meet the high demand for air travel across Southeast Asia. During the Singapore Airshow, Boeing confirmed the order alongside Thai Airways.

Included in the acquisition are 45 Boeing 787 Dreamliner airplanes equipped with General Electric’s GEnx engines. Additionally, the deal provides an option to secure up to 80 Dreamliners in total. Thai Airways has emphasized the flexibility of converting between aircraft within the Dreamliner family, an attribute that allows the airline to adapt to evolving market demands. Moreover, the agreement represents a potential pathway for the acquisition of the Boeing 777X, which offers superior range, capacity, and performance.

Boeing’s senior vice president of commercial sales and marketing, Brad McMullen, lauded the investment, emphasizing that Thai Airways’ strategic commitment to the 787 Dreamliner underscores their dedication to operating a modern, efficient, and flexible fleet. While Boeing did not disclose the specific financial details of the deal, at list prices, the order would amount to approximately $13.16 billion (476 billion baht). It is worth noting that customers typically receive discounts on bulk orders.

As part of Thai Airways’ goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, the GEnx engines are recognized for their advanced technology and reduced environmental impact, as mentioned by the airline’s chief executive officer, Chai Eamsiri.

It is noteworthy that the airline’s ongoing repayment plans under its debt rehabilitation process will not be affected by the addition of the 787 Dreamliner airplanes to the fleet, as specified by THAI.

Amid a resurgence in tourism, Thai Airways reported its fourth consecutive quarterly profit in November, signifying a positive trend in its business. The company anticipates exiting its rehabilitation plan this year. At the conclusion of 2023, the THAI fleet comprised 70 aircraft, with plans to expand to 79 this year and further to 90 aircraft by 2025.
