Thai Authorities Raid Illegal ‘Zero-Dollar Factory’ in Chonburi, Seize 1,600 Tonnes of Toxic Waste
CHONBURI – In a sweeping crackdown on environmental and labour violations, Thai authorities have raided an illegal factory operating inside a free zone in Chonburi province, uncovering over 1,600 tonnes of hazardous aluminium scrap and a host of legal infractions, including the use of undocumented migrant workers.
The operation, conducted on Thursday, was a coordinated effort between the Ministry of Industry and the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division (NRECD). The factory, identified as Metal Central Co., Ltd., was located in the Nong Hiang sub-district of Phanat Nikhom district.
Industry Minister Akanat Promphan announced that the raid followed intelligence reports pointing to multiple violations. A search warrant was issued by the Chonburi Provincial Court, and the operation was carried out under the leadership of Pol Maj Gen Watcharin Phusit, Commander of the NRECD.
Officials from the Department of Industrial Works (DIW) and the Ministry’s specialized inspection team, known as “Team Sud Soi,” also took part in the raid. The team was led by Thitiphat Chotdechachainan, who heads the Minister’s working group.
Authorities discovered that the company had imported aluminium scrap contaminated with electronic waste—an environmental hazard banned under Thai regulations. In addition, the factory was found employing undocumented labourers in clear violation of immigration and labour laws.
Minister Akanat pledged firm action against those responsible, stating that the government will not tolerate factories that jeopardize public health, the environment, or exploit vulnerable workers. Investigations are ongoing, with further legal action expected against the company and its operators.
